Vertigo and Dizziness
Vertigo and other vestibular conditions can be incredibly debilitating. Some wake up with it, others have a more progressive onset.
Regardless of your length of onset, Sage PT offers in-home and in-office vertigo visits to evaluate the source of your vertigo or dizziness and provide effective treatment. Read below for other differentiation of causes of dizziness.

What could be causing my dizziness?

BPPV occurs when tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear become displaced, triggering brief episodes of spinning or vertigo with changes in head position, such as rolling over in bed, looking up, or bending down.
How physical therapy can help: A vestibular physical therapist can assess your symptoms and perform specific repositioning maneuvers to guide the displaced crystals back where they belong. Many cases improve significantly with the appropriate maneuver, often in just one or a few visits.
-
This occurs when one inner ear's balance system is not functioning properly, sometimes following a viral illness, inner ear injury, or other vestibular condition. Symptoms may include dizziness, imbalance, blurred vision with head movement, and difficulty navigating busy environments.
How physical therapy can help: Vestibular rehabilitation uses individualized exercises to improve gaze stability, balance, coordination, and tolerance to movement. Treatment helps your brain adapt to changes in vestibular function so you can move more confidently and return to your daily activities.

Some dizziness originates from the brain or central nervous system rather than the inner ear. Potential causes include vestibular migraine, concussion, or conditions affecting the brainstem or cerebellum. Symptoms may include imbalance, motion sensitivity, visual disturbances, or difficulty coordinating movement.
How physical therapy can help: When medically appropriate, vestibular and neurologic physical therapy can address balance, gaze stability, coordination, walking, and motion sensitivity. Treatment is tailored to the underlying condition and your specific symptoms. Some central causes require medical evaluation or ongoing medical management before or alongside rehabilitation.

Seek emergency medical care for sudden dizziness accompanied by difficulty walking, double vision, slurred speech, facial drooping, weakness or numbness, a sudden severe headache, chest pain, or fainting. These symptoms may indicate a serious medical condition, including a stroke. New, severe, or persistent dizziness—especially when different from your usual symptoms—also warrants prompt medical evaluation.
Physical therapy is not a substitute for emergency medical assessment.

“I had such a great experience with Sarah! I needed vestibular therapy, and from the very beginning, she was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and reassuring. One thing that really stood out was that she came to my home for my first appointment, which made the entire process so much less stressful while I was dealing with dizziness.”
